The 21st Century Cavalry Manual

I learnt to ride so that I could go to Mongolia and gallop across the steppe.  I didn't have the first idea about horses, but I dreamed about the feeling of freedom, of a land without fences, of galloping hooves years before the dream became a reality.  I'll only say one more thing about my experience: it was everything I dreamed of, and more.

So this book, written by a friend of mine, is very close to my heart.  Pete went to Mongolia inspired by romantic stories of the Australian light cavalry, but he ended up on an extraordinary adventure riding from Mongolia to Germany and wrote this book on his 'return' as a 'how to' guide for anyone contemplating similar 'long rides'.

An uncompromising and mercurial character, Pete is adored and reviled in pretty much equal measure, but nothing can take away from this practical, brilliant and eminently readable book.  There is something here for everyone - part travelogue, part self-improvement manual, part horsemanship guide and part endurance textbook, Pete's friendly and conversational style makes it completely unputdownable.

A modern classic.
