MARY-LOU

The story of a high-country lamb

EVERY YEAR when lambing-time comes around, a high-country homestead kitchen becomes a Plunket Room for motherless lambs. And, if the housewife is as warmhearted as Mona Anderson was at Mount Algidus, one or two of the lambs are kept on as pets till they are fully grown sheep.

But of all the pet lambs that Mrs Anderson brought up, Mary-Lou was the oddest and most lovable. She got into every kind of mischief. bullied the other animals around the place, regarded other sheep with lofty disdain, and came to regard herself as the real boss of the station. Unlike most other pet lambs, she didn't lose her personality as she grew up. and she is still at Mount Algidus, still a real "character".

This is a true story. In the photographs you'll see Mary-Lou and Mrs Anderson against the background of the New Zealand high-country that calls to us all.
