Pat Smythe's One Jump Ahead, sequel to her bestseller, Jump for Joy, told of her experiences in many places throughout Europe and America. Jumping Round the World tells of her visit 'Down Under' where, after first competing in the Rome Olympics, she went via San Francisco and the beautiful Hawaiian islands on a tour of the horse shows in New Zealand and Australia. Here a full and taxing programme of judging, demonstrations. lectures and sightseeing awaited her-a programme which, merely to think about, would leave any ordinary person breathless. But Pat, renowned for her immense vitality and enthusiasm, enjoyed every minute of it. From the Horse of the Year Show in Auckland to the Royal Easter Show in Sydney, where on the magnificent Australian-bred horse. Ocean Foam, she won the Six Bars Competition, her time was spent visiting famous studs, driving hundreds of miles through the countryside and viewing the land, animals, people and their way of life with keen interest.

Filled with vivid impressions of her exciting and memorable tour, Pat left for home, but not before she had visited many more fascinating places on the way. The air-conditioned stables belong-ing to the Sultan of Johore, the ornate Buddhist temples in Bangkok. Geisha dancing in Japan, the colour and pageantry of a Chinese festival in Hong Kong, the breathtaking Himalayas, and the fabulous Taj Mahal are just a few of the many sights and scenes she has recorded here. Back home again, Pat started work immediately training Flanagan and Scorchin for the numer-ous international shows that lay ahead, in which success after success brought triumph and reward to crown a full and exacting year in the life of Britain's greatest and best-loved horsewoman.
