Tom Roberts' third book, on the riding of the horse (following on from Horse Control: the Young Horse and Horse Control and the Bit), sorts out all the theories, adds some of his own and presents a clear pattern for the rider to follow.

Tom Roberts was Franz Mairinger's first pupil in Australia - the photograph of him on the front cover is in tribute.

Tom Roberts was born in September 1900 in Bangalore, India.  After travelling to the UK as a child, at 16 years of age he passed through a special course held at Woolwich, to become the youngest certified riding instructor ever in the British Army.

Tom went on to train polo ponies, hacks, hunters and chargers in Poona, India, where his skill at reforming bad and difficult horses became noticeable.  He joined the Australian Police Force during the depression and in 1940 saw service with the 2/7 Australian Field Regiment in Palestine, Egypt and Libya.

After retiring, he went on to hunt, play polo (always on problem horses) and conducted various schools of equitation.  He judged at Royal Shows across Australia.  He was very influenced by Mairinger (Chief Instructor to the Equestrian Federation of Australia and successful Australian Olympic Team - author of the wonderful horsemanship classic Horses are Made to be Horses).

A wonderful writer, his books are classics.  Don't be put off by the somewhat old fashioned title - Tom was an enlightened and brilliant horseman, who was lucky enough to find himself in the golden age of Australian horsemanship.

Condition: hardback.  Old but very good condition (better than photos)
