EASY STEPS TO RIDING AND HORSE CARE is a simple guide for young people who, while well aware of all the pitfalls, are more than eager to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to the care of horses and the fascinating world of equestrianism.

Whether the young rider is using the facilities of the local riding school or is lucky enough to own his or her own horse of pony, it is essential to lay down good foundations in order to become a good rider later on.

Learning to halt, walk, trot and canter correctly will lead the rider on to the more fulfilling and exciting aspects of horsemanship. From riding for pleasure to the high-powered life of top competition, riding is a thoroughly absorbing and rewarding pastime.

It takes a good deal of time, patience and application to reach a good riding standard, but with determination and good schooling there is no reason why people of all ages and abilities cannot achieve a satisfactory level of competence.

It should never be forgotten, however, that, as with many other sports, there is an element of risk involved. You will notice, therefore, that the emphasis is concentrated on the safety of both horse and rider and the need to exercise absolute caution at all times.

Horses are complex and sensitive creatures, as easily upset by inappropriate feeding as they are by ill-fitting saddlery, both of which can make them uncomfortable, if not actually unwell. Even grooming, if carried out incorrectly, can be a potential hazard.

We must never lose sight of the fact that horses have their own strong likes and dislikes and each one has a distinct personality all its own.
