A Guide to Basic Dressage is a charming companion for anyone who aspires to train their horses correctly and compete with them.

Based on General L'Hotte's succint dictum 'Calm, Forward, Straight', the various stages in classical schooling are given in a logical and simple to understand progression and the methods employed are described in detail.

Jean Froissard writes very well.  "dressage" he says "is a craft and thus it can be taught and learnt in simple terms by relatively simple means".  But as with so much good equestrian writing, don't be deceived - it might be simple and neatly put, but it isn't easy.  As he goes on: "you cannot feel what you do not understand, you cannot understand what you do not feel.  Both capacities develop together.  I shall try to make you understand what you begin to feel, if you will try to feel what I give you to understand."

A former member of the French jumping team, creator and trainer of the successful French junior jumping team, Froissard is widely recognized as one of the great masters of horsemanship.  He is the author of the classic works Equitation: Learning and Teaching and Jumping: Learning and Teaching.  He and his wife, Lily Powell, edited the encyclopedic work The Horseman's International Book of Reference. They live in Paris.

Condition: hardback.  Oldie but a goodie; dust jacket is discoloured with age but otherwise the book is in very good condition.
